EFF Blue Ribbon Free Software Foundation NO2ID - Stop ID cards and the database state

OPT OUT OF THE NHS DATABASE!

Make sure it's YOU that decides IF and WHEN your records are uploaded.
ARE YOU GOING TO TRUST ANY GOVERNMENT WITH YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS?
It's your data, not the government's, at risk, just look at their record.

The Oaklands Practice mentioned in the above, where they have the policy of not putting your records on the central database unless you "opt in". When I find more with similar policies I'll make sure to post them.

"Who is Keris?" I hear you asking. ("Who is John Galt?" It took a whole book to answer that one). Well, if you find out, please tell me - my family would like to know as well. But mundanely I'm Chris Croughton, a freelance computer programmer, SF fan and filker. Yes, one of the many fans called 'Chris', that's why I generally go under the name of 'Keris' (like Winnie The Pooh, who lived under the name of Sanders, and like me was a Bear of Very Little Brain).

Why not check out the pages of some of my friends while you're waiting for me to finish this page? To start with, there's Minstrel's Hall of Filk run by a fellow filker (and in fact one of the other fans called Chris) from England. If you like folk music, Talis Kimberley is a filk and folk writer and performer from Britain.

And if you're interested in more filk and gaming, and other interesting stuff, Roger Burton West has a selection of links to his own and other material.

Spam, spam, spam, spam...

Unfortunately, unlike the Monty Python sketch Internet spam is not funny. The words boring, annoying and frustrating are more appropriate. It exists in two major forms, off-topic and unwanted messages on Usenet (often cross-posted or multi-posted), and unsolicited email sent to private accounts (the latter can be divided into Unsolicited Commercial Email and Unsolicited Bulk Email, but they are functionally the same).

What can you do about it? If you don't have the time, knowledge or inclination to work out the addresses in junk emails yourself then I recommend SpamCop, this is a site which allows you to enter an email you've received and it parses it and checks net databases to find where the spam originated (and will also warn you if it seems not to really be spam). It will also act as a filter to weed out most of the spam while passing mail 'clean' addresses (but this costs money; not a lot, but some, I find it worthwhile).

The Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email is a group of volunteers dedicated to fighting junk email.

This is another anti-spam site.

Some comments on spam reports.

Note for spammers: SPAM IS NOT WELCOME AT MY SITE!.

Hah! I bet you thought I couldn't spell ThatBigWordStartingWithM, didn't you? That's why I use the ispell spell checker (not to be confused with the Patented Spell Chucker used by all Great Wizards)...

(Of course, ispell is a Unix program. Not for Windozers <g>...)

Talking of Unix, here's a pointer to the Linux site - Unix for PCs, Alphas, Suns and many more. And my preferred distribution of Linux, Ubuntu. I'm not getting into an argument about 'best', it's the one I like is all...

Cygwin for a Unix-type environment under Windows.

If you want some amusement, the Babelfish translator is actually a good translation system, but like any translations gives rather odd results sometimes. For instance, try translating this page (I particularly like how the German for an SF Fan comes out as a SF Ventilator). Or here's one I did earlier...

If you have comments or want to contact me, my preferred email address for Internet mail is chris AT keristor DOT net - sorry, it's spamblocked...

If you have PGP, or better GPG (the Freee Software version), I prefer it if you encrypt using the appropriate key (note that you may need to tell some versions to use an RSA key).

User: I'm having problems with my text editor.
Help desk: Which editor are you using?
User: I don't know, but it's version VI (pronounced: 6).
Help desk: Oh, then you should upgrade to version VIM (pronounced: 994). VIM

For some tips on using vim, see my page of vim tips.
